Laser Gum Contouring

For patients seeking a solution for "gummy" smiles, laser gum contouring is an excellent option.  Laser technology makes trimming away excess gum tissue quick and relatively painless, revealing more of the tooth for a fuller smile.  The laser also reduces bleeding and swelling during and after treatment, shortening the post-operative recovery time.

Tooth-Colored Bonding

Tooth-colored bonding uses ceramic materials to cover minor chips and cracks in a tooth.  The bonding material blends with the tooth, takes only one office visit to apply, and is a relatively inexpensive alternative to porcelain veneers.

Tooth-colored fillings are an attractive solution for tooth decay. Unlike unsightly metal fillings, which can contain potentially harmful elements, tooth-colored fillings are made of durable, non-hazardous composite materials that blend flawlessly with the tooth. Our practice provides tooth-colored fillings to eliminate tooth decay and to replace outdated metal fillings.

Dental Onlays

Dental onlay are a conservative, dental laboratory prepared restoration that preserves as much of your healthy, natural tooth structure as possible while strengthening the tooth. Onlays are used on a tooth that has a large filling in it or a large amount of decay where added build-up and reinforcement of the tooth is needed. Onlays are also used to add a biting platform when the biting area has been eroded or lost.

Porcelain Crowns and Bridges

Porcelain crowns and bridges can be an effective treatment option for patients who have missing or badly damaged teeth.  Porcelain dental crowns are ceramic tooth-shaped shells that cover and protect cracked, broken, or chipped teeth.  Dental bridges provide a way to replace missing teeth by anchoring an artificial tooth between two natural teeth.  Porcelain crowns and bridges look natural and are a non-invasive option for restoring damaged teeth.

Porcelain-Fused-to-Gold Crowns and Bridges

Occasionally metal reinforced crowns and bridges are needed. These are called porcelain fused to metal crowns or “PFM” bridges. These can be made to be very esthetic and beautiful, especially when using gold metal. PFM type crowns and bridges are most often used when the tooth has a lot of missing tooth structure, the bite needs to be built up or space between the missing teeth (the span of the bridge) is long.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are placed when a tooth needs to be removed. Implants are placed by a gum specialist or an oral surgeon who works closely with the Center for Esthetic Dentistry, LLC in New Haven, Connecticut. Provisional resin crowns can often be placed immediately with the final porcelain crown placed after the implant has fully healed, somewhere at 2-6 months. Once healing has occurred, often within 2 visits the new, natural porcelain crown in placed and the procedure is complete. Patients report that this is a very simple procedure, with not much discomfort; often the decision to place an implant is much more painful than the procedure itself.

Removable Partial Dentures

Sometimes it is not possible to replace teeth with a fixed restoration like a bridge.   Birth defects, teeth in odd positions, many multiple missing teeth and finances are some possible reasons for a removable partial or complete denture to be placed.  Removable teeth have a definite place in the restorative dentistry and patients can get years of service out of them.

Gum Care

Your gums provide the foundation for all the functioning the teeth are required to do. It is VERY important to take good care of the gums.  Proper brushing, at least two times a day and flossing, at least once a day is mandatory.  At the Center for Esthetic Dentistry, LLC, our cosmetic hygienist teaches the best way to do this and makes the appropriate follow-up appointments.  Gums health is checked frequently and often.

Periodontal Treatments

Periodontal treatments are necessary if gums are inflamed, if gingivitis or periodontics is present, if gums have receded or changed shape, if surrounding bone is lost and/or if teeth are loose.  Periodontal treatments can be as simple as deep cleanings of the roots of teeth (root planning and scaling), to antibiotic therapy, to localized medications in the gum, to aggressive tooth removals and bite reduction, to gum surgery and bone implantations.  At the Center for Esthetic Dentistry, LLC we work closely with our cosmetic hygienist and a periodontist who advises our patients on the best course of therapy for their condition.  Periodontal disease is not something that gets cured; periodontal disease gets stabilized and corrected, never eliminated.  Proper brushing and flossing (as described above) are the main daily treatments for clean, healthy and properly contoured gums free of periodontal disease.
